WHY TRACK ANIMALS

  • Many animals are not protected because we do not know how many there are, by tracking them we can estimate their population, and get them protected.

  • Many Species will travel vast distances in a migration, each habitat they pass through is important to their survival, and they will need protection along with their habitats wherever they go.

  • Climate change will inevitably affect the distributions and migrations of animals, and even plants. By monitoring their movement over time and how it changes experts will be able adapt conservation plans and strategies to attempt to restrict the affect of climate change on global biodiversity.

  • To raise awareness - by knowing more about the behaviour of species we can reveal their complexities and eccentricities that are fascinating. The more we understand about them the more we can relate with them, and ultimately the more they will be appreciated.

  • To keep people informed. How nice would it be to know that the animal you saw on holiday was also seen in South Africa, the Caribbean and Canada; plus the baby it had with it survived its first year.

  • Because it is interesting and at least for some of us rewarding fun.
